Connecting Science with Other Ways of Knowing --- a One Culture Course

AN OLLI IN-PERSON COURSE, SPRING, 2025

Note: I renamed the course after the catalog came out. It's now called Connecting Science with Other Ways of Knowing --- a One Culture Course. I hope this change will avoid confusion between the course name and the name of the larger website, One Culture: Science and the Humanities, from which all my OLLI courses have been derived.

As product labels often say, "New Look, Same Great Product." (I hope you'll agree.)

This course meets Thursdays, 9:30 to 11:30 AM from March 20 through May 15, with NO CLASS April 10. Please note this variation from a normal schedule: once week without a meeting (April 10), and a final meeting during OLLI's makeup week (May 15).

Welcome

I do not have a rigid plan, so I can take advantage of what I learn about your interests as we go.

For weekly assignments and course news, click Assignments under Course Pages in the right-hand column.

Where to Start

The heart of the course will be the essays in Reflections on Science and the Humanities, which is listed under Course Pages in the menu in the right-hand column. So if you are undecided about whether to stick with the course, reading into those essays might help you decide. Or if you want to get a head start, that's the place. I will also make use of other materials at One Culture home.

Navigating Course Materials

The usual procedure will be readings assigned in email by the end of the day each Saturday before class. At the next class, we will discuss the assigned materials, often with supplementary videos and illustrations.

To help you easily find assigned materials at the One Culture website, I will provide direct links in each pre-class email to each assigned item.

Help With Exploring One Culture

My One Culture website is large and labyrinthine, with items that serve many functions besides this course. I hope you will explore it beyond the assigned readings. To help you find your way home from just about anywhere, on the menus on the right of each page, there will always be an item like this:

Catalog Description (from OLLI Spring Catalog)

Gale Rhodes is on a lifetime mission to see things whole — to find connections between his interests in science, and other ways of knowing, including poetry, art, and music. The fruits of his quest comprise the website One Culture: Science and the Humanities (hereafter called One Culture).

Join Gale to learn more about how physical and life scientists think and work together to make new knowledge. Then we will seek out connections between science and other ways of knowing by reading and discussing selected materials at One Culture.
